Kawartha Speedway has always held the tradition of racing on Friday nights.
However, with discussions surrounding that the casino and horse track portion of Kawartha Downs was closing in the coming years, a lot of people thought that the asphalt race track would be closing as well.
Though with discussions that the horse track portion may not be closed the success of the August OSCAAR event, there was a want for racing to return to the famed oval. Andrew McFadden kicked off the movement, beginning to work with a group of people on funding and what it would take to run a series.
His hard work turned into the creation of the “Grassroots Racing” series and McFadden has since released the tentative schedule that he has in place for the event.
A driver’s meeting and early bird registration will take place on Sunday February 23rd. Regular registration will take place at the open practice on Friday May 16th.
The season opened will be held Friday June 6th, featuring a 30 lap Late Model feature, 25 lap Thunder Car feature, 20 lap Mini Stock feature, 20 lap for the Four Funs and a 20 lap invitational feature for the Legends.
The second date will on Father’s Day – June 15th with the Late Models, Thunder Cars, Mini Stocks, Four Funs and Legends. There will also be “Kawartha Call of the Wild” 25 lap feature – which is a pure open competition ‘run what you brought’ type of deal.
The third date is Sunday June 22nd with the Late Models, Thunder Cars, Four Funs and Legends. The afternoon/night will also feature a 30 lap Mini Stock invitational.
Sunday July 6th will feature the Late Models, Mini Stocks, Four Funs and Legends – along with a 50 lap Thunder Car invitational.
Friday July 18th will feature the thunder cars, mini stocks, four funs and legends, along with a 100 lap Late Model invitational.
Friday July 25th will feature the late models, thunder cars, mini stocks, four funs and legends.
Friday August 8th will feature the late model, mini stock, four funs and legends, along with a 50 lap Thunder Car invitational.
The final night of the season will be Friday August 15th with the late models, thunder cars, four funs and legends, along with a 30 lap Mini Stock invitational.
There is a rain date scheduled for Sunday August 17th.
These dates, along with the pair of OSCAAR events and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season finale are a welcome sight to many fans as it means that one of their favourite famed tracks in the province will be staying open longer.
