JR Motorsports newest driver, Chase Elliott, was fastest in Nationwide Series testing on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway. Elliott drove his No. 9 NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet to the top of the charts with a lap of 187.993 MPH.
Elliott has carried the number 9 moniker in most of his racing ventures. The number is somewhat of a family tradition, as his father, former series champion Bill Elliott, used the number for a large part of his storied career, including when he won the NASCAR Cup Series championship in 1988.
Making the day even more memorable for Chase Elliott was the fact that his father was also testing on Saturday for JR Motorsports. The elder Elliott drove the No. 5 Chevrolet that is usually driven by various drivers throughout the season.
Bill proved that he still has what it takes to be successful in NASCAR competition posting the second fastest lap for the day turning a lap of 187.974 MPH, just .005 seconds slower than the lap posted by his son.
JR Motorsports had plenty to be proud of on Saturday as driver Regan Smith posted the third fastest lap of the day.
Rounding out the top five were Richard Childress Racing driver, Ty Dillon and Roush-Fenway Racing’s Trevor Bayne.
The Nationwide Series cars will hit the track again on Sunday at 9:00 am
