The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series would have a pair of practices on Saturday afternoon for Sunday’s Ford EcoBoost 400, with Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick leading the way.
Johnson led the first practice with a lap of 30.822 seconds as he looks to close out the season in victory lane following bad luck last weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne was second quickest, 0.067 seconds off of Johnson. Kurt Busch was third fastest, followed by AJ Allmendinger and Matt Kenseth.
Pole sitter Jeff Gordon was sixth with Joey Logano being the highest Sprint Cup Series Championship Contender in seventh. Logano qualified ninth for the race after struggling throughout the first practice on Friday afternoon. Harvick was eighth fastest as he comes in with a shot at the championship as well. Brad Keselowski and Paul Menard rounded out the top-10.
Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin, who also have a shot to win the championship this weekend, were 12th and 13th respectively.
Harvick would lead the final practice with a lap of 30.845 seconds after qualifying fifth yesterday. Gordon was second quickest, followed by Keselowski, Johnson, Hamlin, Kenseth, Kyle Larson, Kahne and Martin Truex Jr. Newman was 12th quickest.
