After winning the OSCAAR Super Late Model Championship last season, Andrew Gresel is set to go for a second straight championship – but in a different division. Gresel will run the full APC United Late Model Series schedule in search of the championship, while running a minimum five races in OSCAAR.
Gresel commented on Friday at the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Show that the decision was made based how the late model series has been put together.
“The series put together a pretty good package for us,” he commented. “We’ve ran the late models before in the past and just putting something new together like that, and getting everybody on the same page. A big driver’s roster, wanting to be apart of it, and not to mention, our sponsors – we’re looking for the biggest bang that we can get for them and we feel this is the right route to take.”
Last season, the driver of the No. 81 SAUBLE Falls Tent and Trailer Park, CUSW, London Recreational, Hy-Grade roofing and Raden Givari of eHomes Realty SLM had an impressive year that saw him score five victories en route to the championship. He started off the 2014 season right near the top with a fourth place finish at Sunset Speedway, only to back it up with a win at Kawartha Speedway. He then put together a string of three top-fives throughout June, before winning three straight wins in a row. He then round off the season with a second at Sunset Speedway, fifth at Peterborough Speedway and second at Sunset Speedway, before claiming his second straight Autumn Colors Classic feature victory in dominating style.
“There was a lot of good stuff that happened with good consistent finishes every night – being in the top-five and having five wins last year,” he commented. “All that stuff means a lot, and to be able to do all that in the 12 races that OSCAAR has, it meant a lot. We had a lot of good times. We also had some tough times, getting the car back together and ready for certain tracks, like Sunset. We fought with for the season – near the end, we got better. it was just a good overall strong year for us.”
After scoring three straight OSCAAR victories at Kawartha Speedway, there’s disappointment in knowing that neither series will go to the track in 2015. However, outside of that, Gresel says that he’s most excited for Delaware Speedway of the five tracks on the APC schedule.
“I haven’t raced Delaware in two or three seasons now, so I’m looking forward to going back to Delaware,” he commented. “It was my home track before OSCAAR.”
Gresel’s No. 81 SLM will be on display all weekend at the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Show. The show takes place from March 13th to 15th at the International Center, and will feature some of the top individuals in both the car enthusiast and motorsports industry. Gresel also has tickets on hand for $5 for a chance to win a pair of season’s passes to Sauble Speedway with all funds raised going to the United Way.
