Following his track championship at Barrie Speedway last year, Gord Shepherd will make the move to Sunset Speedway in 2015 in search of continued success. While Shepherd has been a champion multiple times at Barrie, he has yet to do the same at Sunset Speedway.
If Shepherd is able to, he will become the only driver to win at both tracks under NASCAR sanctioning as Sunset Speedway enters their first season as part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. The opportunity that arises with Sunset becoming NASCAR sanctioned is huge, per Ridge Road Racing team owner Ray Shepherd.
“He wants to win the championship naturally at Sunset,” Ray spoke of his son. “He’s excited about going to Sunset and the number of cars that they have, because somebody in this province might actually finish in the top 10 in the top 500 (NASCAR Whelen All-American Series) drivers.”
Last year, Shepherd had a solid season as he would win on multiple occasions at Barrie en route to the championship, before completing the year off with a victory in the Autumn Colors Classic Pro Late Model feature.
“It felt good because we’ve been second there so many times,” Ray said. “If you seen his interview, he told you that it’s the best race that he’s ever won – never mind the track championships.”
