Last year, Jamie Bound scored the championship for the Hurricane Midgets. When it was announced that they would become apart of OSCAAR, Bound stated that he was hungry more than ever to score the championship once again. He started off his season on the right note, scoring the victory in the Hoosier Spring Velocity Midas of Orangeville OSCAAR Midget feature on Saturday night at Sunset Speedway.
Paul Drananoc would score the victory in the opening heat ahead of James Rodgers, James Stanley, Robin McLean, Brian McDonald, Cory Whittam, Katherine Summers, Ravnor Vickers, Larry Lawson and Shawn Stanley.
The second heat didn’t go as smoothly as Jim Rodgers would go for a spin on lap three, while Ryan Brown ran into problems. Bound picked up the victory ahead of Shawn Stones, Richard Woodland, Mike McLaughlin, Rob Summers, David Gallinger, Bob Ross and Steve Lassman.
Jody Bound won the third heat ahead of Brian Woodland, Adam Carrothers, Mike Bradley, Rob McCall, Shawn Gardner, Wayne McKibbon, Kevin Spiez and Craig Deacon.
Brian McDonald won the fourth heat ahead of Lorne Van Dusen, Stones, Jim Rodgers, Cory Whittam, James Rodgers, Vickers and Brown.
Jamie Bound went for the sweep, scoring the victory in the fifth heat ahead of McCall, Brian Woodland, Lassman, Richard Woodland, Shawn Gardner, Gallinger and Bob Ross.
Bradley would go for a spin on lap six in turn two of the sixth and final heat, while Jody Bound would be caught jumping the start twice in a row, resulting in being moved to the back of the field with four laps to go. Drananoc went for the sweep ahead of Bound, Robin McLean, Adam Carrothers, Bradley, Jim Rodgers and Deacon.
When it came time for the feature, it’d be Robin McLean (pictured right) starting on pole ahead of Adam Carrothers, Brian McDonald, Shawn Stones, Jody Bound, Paul Drananoc, Mike Bradley, Richard Woodland and Rob McCall.
The race would not start off that well, as the big one struck on lap one in turn one with multiple cars going around. The list of involved cars include McCall, James Rodgers, Cody Whittam, Katherine Summers, Lorne Van Dusen, Steve Lassman, James Stanley, Bound, Mike McLaughlin, David Gillinger and Larry Lawson.
The second attempt to get the race going went smoother with Carrothers jumping out to the early lead ahead of Bound and McDonald. Drananoc would work his way through the field, passing McDonald for third spot on lap two. McDonald would fall to fourth ahead of McLean, Richard Woodland and Brian Woodland. They would get into a smooth rhythm till the caution flew at lap six for Van Dusen slowing. Then, under caution, Drananoc would run into troubles.
Bound was able to use the restart to his advantage, snatching the lead ahead of Carrothers and McDonald. McDonald was poised to have a good run, till he got loose in the corner and went for a spin in turn four for the third caution.
Jamie Bound would get a good restart to hold the advantage ahead of Carrothers as Jody Bound moved into third ahead of Brian Woodland and McLean. Jody would continue his climb, getting alongside Carrothers for second at lap 10, completing the pass a lap later. Jody would get a chance to catch up to Jamie as the caution flew for McCall going for through the dirt in turn two.
Jamie Bound got another good restart to hold the advantage at lap 18 ahead of Jody Bound, Brian Woodland, McLean, Carrothers while Richard Woodland and McCall battled for sixth. There would be contact made between the pair, causing McCall to get really sideways, but he was able to save it and keep going. The slide would result in him falling back through the field, though, as Woodland was able to hold down the sixth spot ahead of McDonald while Lassman and James Stanley battled for eighth. The caution would then fly, though, on lap 23, for Whittman spinning in turn four.
Jamie Bound would get a good restart and held off the late race chargers to score the victory ahead of Jody Bound. Robin McLean would get around Brian Woodland in the late going to snatch third, while Adam Carrothers rounded out the top-five. Richard Woodland finished sixth, followed by Randy Hiusser, Mike Bradley, Steve Lassman, Shawn Stones, Rob McCall, Mike McLaughlin and James Stanley.
To cap off the night, Bob Ross would score his first career victory in the non-qualifiers race, followed by Raynor Vickers, Ryan Brown and Wayne McKibbon.
The Midas of Orangeville OSCAAR Midgets will return to action next weekend as they head to Peterborough Speedway for the second race on their schedule.
