When Regan Smith announced that he would not return to JR Motorsports, everyone assumed that he had something lined up for 2015. Unfortunately, that is not proving to the case, according to his latest interview with USA Today.
The misconception was, ‘You have something and that’s why you’re leaving JRM,’” he said. “No, I got told I didn’t have a position there in the coming season. Now I’m paying more attention to the free agency thing, I can say with 100% certainty I’ve never seen it this difficult to get things done and solidified.”
Smith is hoping that he can find a ride for 2016, given the fact that he has won previously in the Sprint Cup Series and is a current front runner in the XFINITY Series.
“I know what I’m capable of as a driver,” he said. “The scariest part for me is I don’t want to lose that opportunity to be out there racing and competing. I don’t want to lose these years.”
With a pair of wins and 24 top-10s on the season thus far, Smith currently sits fourth in the series standings.
#9 with Petty.
That’s actually originally where I had placed him as soon as he announced he wasn’t returning to JRM, to be honest. It makes sense as Hornish hasn’t performed much.
