For the Kohler Grand Prix at Road America Josef Newgarden, driver of the No. 21 Direct Supply Chevrolet, battled to a top-10 finish despite injuries he suffered to his shoulder and hand in a wreck at Texas Motor Speedway for the Firestone 600.
The Hendersonville, Tennessee native would have a tough time in qualifying for the race and would start in the 20th position.
“I feel little disappointed…. a lot of that comes out of qualifying as I didn’t do a good job putting the car where it needed to be,” he said.
He would fight hard from the back of the racing pack from the start to get eighth place finish once the checkered flags flew.
“I’m really happy points wise,” he said. “I think we gained a lot on the front runners in the field. I’m not going to discount eighth; it’s a great run. We maximized it the day. Now I’m going to try and heal up a little more and go to Iowa Speedway and tackle that physical demanding track.”
The next race is the Iowa Corn 300 on July 10th where in four starts Newgarden has two podium finishes.
