John Hunter Nemechek was penalized on Thursday Afternoon by NASCAR for being too low during post race inspection following last Saturday’s UNOH 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Nemechek was docked 10 championship driver’s points, which drops him from fourth to seventh in the championship standings heading into Saturday night’s DC Solar 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Nemechek now sits five points behind the sixth and final transfer spot in the first round of the Truck Series Chase for the Championship.
Nemechek’s family-owned Nemco Motorsports team has not yet decided whether to appeal the penalty.
The points penalty (and a $6,000 fine to crew chief Gere Kennon) were consistent with penalties issued during the regular season for similar infractions. NASCAR had told teams in the XFINITY and Truck Series last week that it might use sanctions other than points for infractions found during events or postrace.
