Kevin Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Ford Fusion for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR), and crew chief Rodney Childers, hit with stiff penalties for infractions that occurred during the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup event at Las Vegas last weekend. Harvick won the event in dominating fashion leading 214 of 267 laps. He also won both stages scoring maximum points for the event.
The infractions were related to a rear window support and structure. When the car was at speed, the top corner of the rear window would collapse creating a depression area which likely created a positive impact on airflow and downforce.
An L1 level penalty was assessed leading to a fine of $50,000 for crew chief Rodney Childers, the suspension of car chief, Robert Smith for the next two races and a loss of 20 driver and owner points (see graphic below).
The win at Vegas was the second in a row for Harvick. His No. 4 team was also assessed penalties following last week’s win at Atlanta for improperly secured lugnuts.
