Pietro Fittipaldi, the grandson of two-time Formula 1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, was reportedly severely injured in a qualifying crash for the 6 Hours of Spa at Spa Francorschamp. The 21-year-old’s injuries are not life-threatening.
An FIA bulletin was issued shortly after the crash stating that Fittipaldi fractured both his legs in the shunt.
Driving for Dragon Speed LLC, he bobbled in a turn and went off track at a high rate of speed. Fittipaldi made heavy contact with tire barriers. The FIA says he was conscious at all times, and was airlifted to hospital.
Fittipaldi was expected to make his Indianapolis 500 debut for Dale Coyne Racing later this month, but that now looks in doubt. He was also supposed to drive in the Indianapolis GP on the infield road course next weekend.
