Each day of the week, the column will highlight a division, highlighting five drivers and mentioning things that you should know going into the next week of racing.
Robin McLean came out swinging in the first event of the season, posting a third place finish in the season opener at Sunset Speedway. The return trip to Sunset Speedway, that produced even more magic.
McLean ran up front throughout the 25-lap feature, putting himself in position for another solid performance. He then used the final restart to his advantage, making his way up through the field and snatching the victory on Saturday night. McLean becomes the third different winner in three races thus far for the Midas of Orangeville OSCAAR Midgets. He’s also proven that he is going to be a threat each time he hits the track this season.
Jody Bound is only a rookie, but he’s also improving early that he’s going to be a threat to win this year. He led some laps on Saturday night after taking the lead at lap 12, before finishing the feature in the second spot. In just three OSCAAR Midget starts, he has posted two runner-up finishes, both coming at Sunset Speedway. He didn’t have the same type of luck at Peterborough, finishing 16th, but a little struggle is expected for a rookie.
The Midgets are set to return to Sunset Speedway a couple more times this season. Given the early signs of success, could Bound snatch his first career win later this year at Sunset Speedway?
While McLean and Bound are stealing the highlight reel, Adam Carrothers is playing the consistency card. In his two starts this far this season, both coming at Sunset Speedway, he finished fifth and third. They say if you put yourself in position to win, sometimes you snatch a win on the right opportunity as anything can happen. Perhaps the pieces will fall together for Carrothers in the coming weeks this season.
Brian McDonald started off the year on a sour note, struggling in the season opener at Sunset Speedway. However, he has since proved that he’ll be someone to watch for the rest of the 2015 schedule. He finished fourth at Peterborough Speedway, before finishing sixth last weekend. Now able to find his groove and consistency, could he be your fourth different winner of the season?
Larry Lawson and Sunset Speedway don’t seem to get along that well. He ran into mechanical problems on Saturday night, resulting in a 23rd place finish. These were the same bugs that caused him a poor showing in the first event of the season, as well. He also had a bad wreck at Sunset Speedway last year, flipping and making contact with the track’s wall while in the air. It goes without saying that he needs to find a rabbit’s foot or a four leaf clover before returning to Sunset Speedway in hopes of some better luck. If he can get things to go his way, he has shown that he can get it done – evident by a top-10 finish at Peterborough.
