Last year, Gary Klutt started off his season in dramatic fashion – scoring his first career victory in the first race of the year. Contact ahead of him between Andrew Ranger and Scott Steckly opened the door, and that’s all he needed as he’d cross the finish line in the all important spot.
“I knew I didn’t have the pace and wasn’t willing to have the pace to catch those guys,” he told Race Time Radio. “I’ve seen it before on TV – seen Ranger and another guy get into it and that’s what I was hoping for and happened.”
Klutt followed it up with six more top-10s en route to finishing sixth in the season-ending points. Now going into this year, he hopes to produce even stronger results.
“We want to win again at Mosport and get a couple wins under our belt,” he said. “We also want to get some solid finishes as a couple DNFs hurt us. We want to win the whole championship, as well.”
He is coming back with the same group of guys, as John Fletcher will once again call the shots, and has built a new road course car over the off-season. It’s just about making sure to find success on both the road courses and ovals.
“I like both,” he admits. “Before I did any oval races, John said to me that it was a totally different sport and it is. It’s refreshing each weekend that we get to go do some road courses, and then some ovals.”
Perhaps he can start off in the same style, with another win at Canadian Tire Motorpsorts Park on May 22.
“We showed a lot of speed and I think we’ve found some speed over the winter,” he said. “So the plan is to try and drive the thing out front this year.”
