TRENTON, Ont. – May 17, 2016 – Charlie Sandercock continued a string of top-five finishes to start his 2016 Pro Late Model season with a second-place finish Saturday night at Brighton Speedway. The podium finish follows a pair of fifth-place finishes.
Sandercock started seventh in the 30-lap event and was patient on a wide, but slick racetrack. The driver of the Bellevue Fabricating/Deerhaven Farm and Garden was in no rush early on to make an unnecessary move.
“We just kind of picked our lines and weed through traffic as easy as possible and come out with little or do damage. We were able to do that, so we just kind of took our time,” Sandercock explained. “We ended up finishing second, so we can’t complain about that.”
The race was another chance for the 57 team to test the new setup and changes they made over the off-season. Sandercock is still getting accustomed to the changes.
“We have a new car design, so we’re trying to shake out some bugs. We’re getting it a little bit better each time we get out,” Sandercock said.
Despite the changes, Sandercock still challenged at the front. The Trenton native passed Kyle Sopaz for second on lap 22 and set out to erase the 4.1 second lead held by Adam Turner. At the checkered flag, the lead was less than 0.5 seconds, but Sandercock ran out of laps to challenge Turner.
“I think the traffic had a little bit to do with what was going on there. Our car was working a lot bit better towards the end,” Sandercock said.
“We were catching him on the last lap. If there wasn’t a lapped car on the inside of turn three and four coming to the checkered, I might have tried an aggressive slide on the inside, but I didn’t quite have room.”
Sandercock and the rest of the 57 Racing Team are gearing up for a busy tripleheader. The weekend starts Saturday at Brighton Speedway before round two of the Go Nuclear Late Model Series on Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway and concludes Monday at Merrittville Speedway for a RUSH Tour race.
Sandercock has plenty of experience at the first two tracks, but has not turned a lap at Merrittville. As a result, he’s particularly excited for the new venture.
“I’m sure it’s going to be a slick race track. The Modifieds will be there and we’ll have to be really careful with what we’re doing. I’m looking forward to it knowing there’s going to be lots of competition there,” Sandercock explained.
