BRIGHTON, Ont. – June 6, 2016 – Phil Potts and the Fowl Mood Race team debuted a brand new racecar and drove to a fifth-place finish on Saturday night at Brighton Speedway to start the month of June.
A lightning fast and tacky racetrack made it difficult to gain any advantage on the speedway. The majority of the racing took place in the top lane of the track. Despite the challenging conditions, Potts did advance from his seventh-place starting spot to finish fifth.
“As soon as they graded the top off and put a little splash of water in the middle, I looked at it and thought ‘that’s where we’re all going’. Everybody’s going to be on the top and it’s going to be wide-open,” Potts said, reflecting on his thoughts prior to the race.
The result was especially impressive for the team in their first night in the new Longhorn Chassis car.
“We all want to win every night, but we took two solid top-five away, there’s no damage to the car,” Potts added. “We’ll go in, we’ll go over what we had and we know what we did. We got an idea of what to do next week.”
Potts now has six top-five finishes in his last seven starts and five in a row to start the season at Brighton. The result is third in the championship standings, just 30 points behind Charlie Sandercock and Brandon Mowat, who are tied for the points lead, through five races.
Following the first race with his new car, Potts is excited about the potential of his Longhorn ride.
“It’s definitely got a different feel than the Rocket-built car,” Potts said. “You feel more in the track and the car is stable. When I get the front end issues addressed, it will be fast.”
The Brighton, Ont. based driver could tell the car had excellent forward bite off the corner in his first night in the car. Potts is looking forward to the first time he gets to sample it on a slick track.
“I’m praying for the slicked over night. When the track is black slick, I think this car is going to be a force to be reckoned with,” Potts said.
He may get that chance when the team returns to action next Saturday, June 11 at Brighton. For event information, visit www.brightonspeedway.com.
