TRENTON, Ont. (June 13, 2016) – Charlie Sandercock continued another strong start to his 2016 season with a fifth-place finish after starting near the rear of a challenging field at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.
Sandercock dropped back as far as 12th after the green flag waved to start the race. It was a cautious approach for the No.57 team to start with a number of cars racing two- and three-wide at the front of the field.
“We kind of got tied up at the beginning of the race. There was nowhere really to go. We had to wait for our chance and opportunity. I was keeping my head up and making sure nothing was going to happen at the front,” Sandercock said.
“It’s a 30-lap race, so we didn’t want to win it on the first lap. We just kept picking our way through cars.”
The race ran caution-free for all 30 laps, which made it difficult for any driver to track down the leader, Steve Baldwin, who had pulled to an eight car length lead over the rest of the field. Sandercock was already embroiled in a battle for third with Brandon Mowat and Phil Potts.
“I just didn’t quite have enough to get by Mowat at the end,” Sandercock said of his last lap challenge for fourth.
Sandercock entered the race tied with Mowat for the points lead. Those two drivers were closely followed by Potts and Baldwin. With all four drivers finishing in the top-five again this week, the race will continue to heat up towards the end of June.
“We’re happy with it. The competition’s good and we can’t really complain about the racing,” Sandercock explained. “The top four cars are within 20 points of each other, so it should be interesting going in to next weekend and the weeks that follow.”
The close quarters racing and minimal margin for error means a challenging night for the drivers, like Sandercock, starting towards the rear of the field.
“There’s so much competition and guys are so fast. When you start deep in the field, you’re just trying to pick away at what you can,” Sandercock said. “If there are no cautions, the guys that do start out front, they get a good rhythm going on. It’s really hard to pull those guys back in.”
Charlie Sandercock and the 57 Race Team will look to earn their second win of the 2016 season next Saturday night, June 18 when the Southern Ontario Sprints are also in town. Event information is available at www.brightonspeedway.ca.
