OAKLAND, Ont. – June 12, 2016 – The Insta-Insulation Motorsports team had another exciting night as Karl Sault turned in his second straight podium finish in Thunder Stock competition and Brad Herron earned another top-five.
Starting 15th in the 20-lap Thunder Stock main event, Sault had his work cut out for him to get to the front. A tacky and fast racetrack enabled him to race forward in a hurry as he drove to sixth by lap three.
Sault then made the most of a lap seven restart and took the lead over the next four laps until a tough battle with Dave Bailey. The two raced door-to-door for four laps until Bailey emerged with the top position. Sault drove to a strong second-place finish.
“The car was handling great. Bailey got underneath me in turns one and two and I just couldn’t get him back,” Sault said of the winning pass. “I could get there, but he had a better run coming out of the corners. He had a little higher line which was smoother. I just ran out of motor.”
The run was another positive step for Sault who got to the front quickly after getting stuck in traffic one week ago, but racing to a third-place finish.
“The openings were there this week. I was able to get past a bunch of cars and I got up front. It was a good run,” Sault added.
In Crate Sprint Car competition, Brad Herron emerged with a strong fourth-place finish after a challenging battle for second with Aaron Turkey and Holly Porter. Herron started on the pole for the 20-lap feature event, but a rough spot in turn one hampered his effort.
“I think we might have hit the rut in the centre (of turn one) and it upset the car. We went for a big slide. After that I decided we were going to the top,” Herron said. “We tried some different stuff this week – different shock combinations – to try and get a bit more drive off the corner. It worked so, it was a good night.”
A green-white-checkered finish nearly played in to Herron’s hands as he challenged Turkey and Herron for second.
“We were quicker in one and two, but they were faster in three and four, so it was going to be a game of cat and mouse all night long,” Herron said of the year-end battle. “It was good tight racing. It was anybody’s race.”
Alex Schuts drove to a 10th-place finish in his fifth career start after missing his heat race. Schuts was able to battle with several drivers for a spot inside the top 10 and was satisfied with another strong run as he continues to become more aggressive in the car.
“I was happy with the way the car was setup. I’m super energized about the whole experience. I feel I’m getting a little more aggressive. I know when to hit the throttle a bit more,” Schuts explained. “I’m teaching myself to be patient a little bit more than I normally would, because I know it’s open wheel. I’m still excited about it and I’m happy.”
