SAUBLE BEACH, Ont. (July 5, 2016) – Andrew Gresel dominated the Thames OK Tire 100 at Delaware Speedway for the APC United Late Model Series to claim his third win of the season with the tour on Canada Day. The win was Gresel’s fourth overall this season and second at Delaware, continuing his impressive start to the 2016 campaign.
Gresel started the day with a fast time in qualifying and retained the top spot following the redraw for the top five cars.
“We were able to clinch the pole, finally. That’s something we really needed to do to get those bonus points. It was nice to get a pole,” Gresel said excitedly.
The number one position was the only spot the London Recreational/McRobert Fuels/CUSW No.81 Ford occupied over the course of 100 laps as Gresel led every circuit on the way to the victory.
“Throughout the race there were quite a few cautions and enough restarts. We were able to hold on and the car worked pretty well the whole race. It never fell off,” Gresel said proudly of the car is crew prepared. “It was awesome and a really good points night.”
Gresel had a perfect night, points wise, earning every point available as the top qualifier, race winner and leading the most laps.
“I never expected that to happen. Everybody else had bad luck and we were able to stay on top. We got every bonus point we could get and were fortunate enough to win,” concluded the Sauble Beach native.
After a frustrating sixth-place finish last week at Sauble Speedway in which Gresel got no practice time due to transmission problems, the win at Delaware was a welcome dose of medicine.
“It’s a feather in our hat, especially after Sauble, to get things back in order. In this deal you have to concentrate on the points. I usually don’t like to focus on points until the end of the year, but every position is one point. Hopefully everything keeps going as well as it has been,” said a confident Gresel.
Gresel and the rest of his Sauble Falls Racing team will have a week off from APC Series competition to prepare their Outlaw Super Late Model. Gresel, a former OSCAAR champion, will campaign the Gallinger Ford/CUSW/F1 Freight Systems No.81 part-time through the second-half of the season. However, his focus has already shifted to Peterborough Speedway, the next stop on the APC Series tour on July 16.
“There’s some guys that are untouchable there. Shawn Chenoweth won every race there last year and Dan McHattie has a lot of laps at that place,” Gresel said in praise of the two veteran drivers.
“It gets pretty tough over there. It’s going to be the most challenging race with Peterborough at this time of the season. Everybody’s running hard this season, but everyone’s keeping their car underneath them,” Gresel concluded. “We’re just looking for a good finish and to try and maintain this points lead.”
