TRENTON, Ont. (July 11, 2016) – Charlie Sandercock collected his third checkered flag in as many weeks and his second weekly win this year at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.
Sandercock drove from the 10th starting position to second by the time of the second and final caution of the race on lap nine when a brief rain shower slowed the pace for about 10 minutes. Sandercock took the lead from Phil Potts on the restart and never looked back.
“We made a few adjustments and the car was good out of the gate. It didn’t seem like it took any time at all and we were up in the first couple of rows,” Sandercock commented. “I knew there was going to be some traction for the next couple of laps until it burned off. I was a little hesitant on flying in on the top side, knowing it was probably a little bit greasy up there.”
Nonetheless, Sandercock made the top side work and grew a lead of eight car lengths over Potts, which equated to a difference of about one second. As the Trenton, Ont. driver began working in lapped traffic, his lead dissipated and Potts was again on his back bumper. Those two drivers had broken away from the rest of the field by a half lap, however.
“I knew he had to be coming. I was focusing on trying to get around lapped cars and I was missing my marks. I knew I was slowing up and he was right there,” Sandercock said of Potts, who was glued to Sandercock’s back bumper over the final five laps.
Continued Sandercock “On the last lap, I saw his nose coming out of turn two, and I knew I had to play defense the next corner and make sure I stayed on the bottom. If I hadn’t done that, he probably would have been able to get underneath me coming off turn four for the win.”
Sandercock’s fourth win of the season is also his third in as many weeks. He has three wins to date at Brighton this season, two of which have come in weekly series action. The No.57 team has been particularly strong over their last four races with three wins and a second-place finish as Sandercock appears to have hit his stride entering the busiest part of the summer.
“We have it where we want it to be, but no one’s ever happy to the point where they’re not going to touch anything else,” said a determined Sandercock. “We’re going to keep tuning and keep tweaking and make it faster yet. Our competition is not going to give up and quit, so we have to be on top of our game.”
Sandercock also made his first 360 Sprint Car start of the season on Saturday night, pulling double duty with the Southern Ontario Sprints. He took second in his heat and turned a third-place starting spot in to a strong fourth-place run.
“I have to say thanks to the guys who helped on both the Late Model and Sprint Car. It was nice to get the Sprint Car back out finally. I have to thank all the sponsors who help me out with that deal and on a weekly basis,” Sandercock added.
The team returns to action on Saturday, July 16 during Salute to our Forces race night at Brighton Speedway. Race time is 7:00pm. Event details are available at www.brightonspeedway.ca.
