He may not have qualified for the Chase, but JR Motorsports driver Cole Custer is still looking to contend for wins.
Custer knows the best way to contend for wins is to start up front, and that’s just what the 18-year-old will do at Talladega Superspeedway when he starts on pole.
Custer had the fastest lap of 53.672 in the second round of qualifying to earn his second pole of the year. Custer’s lap just outdid Daytona polesitter Grant Enfinger by one one-hundredth of a second.
Three more of Enfinger’s GMS Racing teammates round out the top-five starting positions with Spencer Gallagher third, Ben Kennedy fourth and Johnny Sauter fifth.
Timothy Peters will start from sixth this afternoon followed by Cody Coughlin, William Byron, John Wes Townley and Korbin Forrister in a Richie Wauters prepared truck.
Chase contenders John Hunter Nemechek, Matt Crafton, Daniel Hemric and Christopher Bell all qualified outside the top-10 for the final race in round one of the Camping World Truck Series Chase.
With a large fleet of trucks attempting to qualify for the race, four drivers failed to make the race. Clay Greenfield, Jennifer Jo Cobb, Ryan Ellis and Parker Kligerman will each miss the race.
