Marc Marquez has been astounding in his first year of MotoGP Racing. The Repsol Honda Team driver finished third in Sunday’s GP Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana and became the youngest MotoGP champion in history.
The 20-year-old captured the pole for the season finale and ended up sharing the podium with teammate Dani Pedrosa and the race winner Jorge Lorenzo.
Marquez did really receive a lot of luck en route to his first world champion. Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa both suffered crashes that affected their performances allowing the Spain driver to take advantage and capture the title.
Lorenzo came up just short of world championship by finishing second in the overall standings just four markers behind Marquez.
Marquez became the first rookie driver to win the MotoGP championship since “King” Kenny Roberts in 1978. He also became the first rookie in history to win six races in his debut season.
Freddie Spencer held the honors of being the youngest MotoGP driver to win at the age of 21-years-old until today when Marquez stole those honors.
