A crowd of over 200 drivers, crew members, fans and family members gathered at Crossville Raceway on Thursday October 25 to honor the 2007 top five drivers in each class.
The awards banquet at the track which included food and beverages along with some pretty funny stories was a free event for all who attended. The track operator for 2008, William Scogins was the emcee for the evening and quickly became a hit with those in attendance. 2007 was an up and down year for the track, but the site of the huge trophies on display for the top 5 drivers in each class, with the Champions trophies standing 6 feet tall, gave the racers hope for 2008.
The 2007 champions crowned were, Super Late Model – Johnny Stout, Limited Late Model – Dale Nance, Open Wheel Modified – Billy Palmer, Street Stock – Ricky Scruggs, Mini Stock – John Ross and Front Wheel Drive – Jonathan Norris. In addition to the six feet trophies the Champions were also presented with Crossville Raceway Champions Jackets along with Photos from the 2007 season.
The track closed prematurely in late August and left many racers and fans to wonder what the future would bring. Thursday they got a glimpse of the future of the track and things started looking very good. Track operator Al Varnadore had closed the track due to financial concerns, but the owners of the track John McConnell and Steve Girsky were not ready to give up on the track. They have enlisted the help of William Scogins (owner of Clarksville Speedway) to get the track ready for the 2008 season.
William and Chris McConnell who will be in charge for 2008 have been busy at the track this past week getting ready for the awards presentation. Both William and Chris spent the better part of the evening answering questions about the track and it’s future, along with listening to ideas and suggestions from the racers and fans. In preparing for 2008 the track has scheduled a drivers meeting for Sunday December 9th at the track. All drivers and car owners are encouraged to attend. There will be separate one hour meetings by class on that day with the schedule as follows. 12 noon- Cruiser Cars, 1 PM – front Wheel Drives, 2 PM – Mini Stocks, 3 PM Street Stock and 4 PM – Limited Late Models. There will be no meeting for the Open Wheel Modifieds as they will continue to run under the UMP sanctioning body rules.
