Sunset Speedway News and Notes: Super Series Round 3 set for take-off

And here we are at another Saturday as Sunset Speedway prepares for the third round of Super Series action. The action has been hot so far this year and the trend looks to continue with the line-up of drivers set to tackle the track this weekend.

Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Models

Last weekend, Jason Witty was able to get to victory lane after passing Dwayne Baker early in the feature and holding off the charges directed his way by Chris Morrow in the second half of the feature. Witty is one of the two drivers that have finished in the top five in all three Limited Late Model events this season. Witty has finishes of third, third and first to start the year, while Morrow has finished first, first and second to start the year.

While Morrow, Baker and Witty have graced Sunset Speedway’s Late Model victory lane this year, there are plenty of others that could shake things up. Mike Bentley has started off the year solidly with a fourth and fifth, though had his run cut short last weekend due to an incident with a lap car. Driving the Streamline Race Products house car, this could be the week. The other driver to watch is certainly Sean Cronan. Cronan has improved with each week of competition with a sixth, fourth and third in his return to LLM competition. Could Cronan get back to LLM victory lane? Absolutely.

Rookie Steven Wilson has impressed so far with a fifth in the Spring Derby, followed by a pair of seventh place finishes. Picking up his first heat win last week, Wilson looks to score another solid feature finish this time.

Super Stocks

Last week’s feature was highlighted by a thrilling race between Cayden Lapcevich and Lane Zardo for the victory, with Lapcevich picking up the win. That gives Lapcevich his second win of the year as he won the Spring Derby. Surprise? Not at all considering how close Lapcevich came close to winning in the previous two seasons. Given the speed that he’s shown, he should be good this weekend.

Sunset developed a new qualifying format for this season that includes a new element – the Dash for Cash. The top qualifiers each week get to run the race with the winner earning a bonus $75. Zardo won the race on week one, and scored the feature victory. Lapevich won the race on week two, and scored the feature victory. Watch that race closely as the quick car normally shines, promoting more success later in the night.

Keep an eye on Dan Archibald as he continues to get quicker with each passing week and depending how the random draw goes, a good solid starting spot could lead to a successful night.

Grand Landscape Mini Stocks

Last weekend, Billy Schwartzenburg outdueled Andy Kamrath to become the fourth different feature victory winner in four Mini Stock features this year. Kamrath won the Spring Derby, Warren Paxton won week two and Miles Tyson won week three.

So who could become the fifth different winner? Eric Yorke has shown speed in his pair of appearances this year, with a sixth at the Derby and a third place finish last week. Brandon McFerran won four features last year, but has yet to win a feature this year. Rookie Gerrit Tiemersma has shocked people so far this year with solid finishes and speed. Could he score his first career victory?

If we’re headed towards a repeat winner, keep your eyes on Schwartzenburg and Kamrath as they’re both going to be at Sunset this weekend and we could be set for another sweet duel.
