Sunset Speedway News and Notes: Brandon McFerran looking to keep streak alive

Following a pair of exciting days of racing last weekend, Sunset Speedway is set to lighten up the racing grid once again with another two days of exciting racing, featuring some of the top short track drivers in Ontario.

Graham Landscape Mini Stocks

For the month of July, there were three Mini Stock features run at Sunset – a regular night 25 lap feature, a special 30 lap Sauble-to-Sunset feature and a 35 lap invitational. Each of those features saw the same winner – Brandon McFerran. Now the driver of the No. 64 Peter B. Laird Mustang will try and make it four in a row on Saturday night as he will try and dice his way through the traffic on his way to the front of the field. With the pure speed that he has shown, along with his ability behind the wheel getting stronger each week, he will be one to watch.

Since debuting his new ride, Miles Tyson has been  at the front of the field and is one of the five feature winners thus far this year. Could Tyson return to victory lane this weekend?

Rookie Jordan Howse hasn’t looked the part of a rookie the past couple of events, with a pair of top-five finishes last weekend. Howse has continued to get stronger with each passing week as he gets more laps behind the wheel. Could he become the sixth different feature winner?

Super Stocks

Last weekend, fans in the Sunset Speedway crowd were treated to a return to victory lane for one of their favourite drivers as Lane Zardo picked up the victory in Sunday’s invitational feature. Contending up front solidly throughout the season to date, Zardo looks to have the No. 46 Holmes Foundation/Royal Purple Chevrolet dialed in and we’ve seen it before where if someone gets dialed in, they’re tough to beat.

Randy Rusnell was strong both days this past weekend, though came up short both days. Rusnell’s consistancy should take him a long way in his chase towards a third straight championship, but no doubt the Rocket is itching to get back to victory lane.

This season to date has been dominated by three drivers – Zardo, Rusnell and Cayden Lapcevich. Entering the final two months of the season, will a new face rise to join the conversation? Keep an eye on the likes of Paul Geniole Jr., Matt Bentley and Dan Archibald as they’ve shown potential of being that person.

Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Models

Dwayne Baker certainly didn’t make things easy on himself last weekend, but yet posted two incredibly impressive results. He would win the feature on Saturday night after starting 19th, while scoring a third place finish in Sunday’s finish despite making an early pit stop to adjust the handling. Though, is this really a surprise? Not exactly as Baker has been fast all season. If he keeps this momentum going, he will continue to close that gap that Jason Witty has leading the field, and perhaps take over the points lead.

Though as mentioned – Witty is the points leader – by two points over Baker after three months of racing. Witty has been real strong this year, though bad luck as of recent has brought forth some poor finishes for Witty and team. Could they get back on track this weekend? They need something good to happen, especially with Baker and Chris Morrow right on their tail in the points.

Beyond the points battle, there’s a battle going forward as to who will reach victory lane next for the first time this year and join Witty, Baker and Morrow as feature winners. Billy Zardo struggled at the start of the year, but he has turned it around with some solid runs as of late. Taylor Holdaway is figuring out his new chassis and been further towards the front. Sean Cronan has posted some solid top-five finishes. 2013 Champion Mike Bentley and 2012 Champion Tom Walters are winless. So who will break through first? Your guess is as good as mine.

Sean Grosman will be making his 2014 season debut on Sunday, so be sure to keep an eye out to see how he does with Flyin’ Ryan Kimball in charge as the car chief.
