Tracking the Short Tracks: Sunset Speedway Competitor Brandon McFerran

Last year, Brandon McFerran put together a solid season that was highlighted by four feature victories at Sunset Speedway. Coming into this year, McFerran plans on running the full Sunset Speedway schedule in search of his first Mini Stock Championship.

As preparations continue for the new season, McFerran took some time out of his schedule to tackle our favourite list of 15 questions.

1. How’d you get started in racing?

I got started in racing when I was 6 in Batavia, New York racing go karts.. My dad always was at the races helping out Bill Zardo Sr or even racing his challenger car. So it’s been something that’s been a part of my dads life and I guess I just picked it up and carried it on haha

2. First racing memory

One racing memory that I will always remember was at Sunset. I was racing a Jr Late model in 2007 and Lane Zardo was in this race. So me and him were running somewhere around mid pack and I was right behind him. Then next thing you know, his car took a right hand turn in to the wall and he got probably about four feet of air and topped that off with a full 360 ! I’ve never seen so many sparks in my life. So now Lane and I always have a good laugh at that. But it seems to be one of the first best racing memory.

3. If you could be sponsored by any beverage, which would you want to be sponsored by?

It would probably be Gatorade. I drink that stuff like its water.

4. Story behind your car number

Well when dad and I first got a mini stock, we were gonna put the Zardo #46 on it but then we figured if I ever got to race with Lane or Billy then I would have to change numbers so we just changed the numbers around and made #64.

5. If you have a nickname, what is it and why? If not, what do you think should be a good nickname?

I got the nickname The Astronaut by Spencer Lewis in 2012 cause apparently I looked like an astronaut in this new fire suit and shoes I had.

6. If you could race against any NASCAR driver, who and why?

If I could race against any NASCAR driver, it would probably be Kyle Larson or Jimmie Johnson cause to say I got a chance to race with either of those guys it would be awesome! And those are defiantly two people I look up to in NASCAR.

7. What’s your life like outside of racing? Hobbies?

I like to catch up with friends and have a good time cause when racing starts you get distant from your good friends. I don’t really have any hobbies but I also like to go to the go kart track with friends from the track so I really never stop with my racing obsession. It’s like a drug.

8. If you were an animal, what animal would you be?

I’d would wanna be a monkey cause who doesn’t like monkeys right?

9. Favourite pizza topping

Umm I don’t really have one, I like them all.

10. Dream vacation spot

Go to Florida Speedweeks !

11. If you were stuck on an island, what would you have to have?

If I were stuck on a island I would want all of my closest buddy’s cause who wouldn’t want all of there closest buddy’s on a island with no parents haha !

12. Favourite book

Hmm.. I don’t really read so does twitter count? That’s like a never ending book of entertainment.

13. Favourite movie

Days of thunder is hands down my favourite movie!!

14. Favourite piece of technology

Favourite piece of technology would probably be my phone.
