SHELBURNE, ON- After a 2013 season cut short due to an off-track injury, Kevin Cornelius and the KDR Motorsports team are looking to leave their mark on Ontario’s premier tour, with a full-time effort planned for 2014.
“I can’t wait to get back out there”, remarked Cornelius at the tour’s recent open test session. “Our Rookie campaign was cut short just as we were starting to hit our stride”
Cornelius injured his hand in a workplace accident just 5 races into the 2013 season, effectively ending his run at the Rookie of the Year title.
“For anyone that’s never driven a Super Late Model, they’re definitely the sort of thing you want to be able to control with both hands”, jokes the affable veteran.
Despite its impromptu ending, Cornelius maintains his freshman year was far from a lost cause.
“The amount that we learned in those 5 races is staggering”, explains the former Sunset Speedway Ltd. Late Model champion. “We improved every time off the hauler last season, and the knowledge we picked up is going to allow us to continue that trend in 2014”
The Shelburne, ON is quick to describe just how much a return to competition means to the whole KDR Motorsports operation.
“This is for my team just as much as it is for me. I felt as though I let them down by having our season cut short last year, and that motivates me to come out and give them something to get excited about at Sunset”
Cornelius gave himself plenty to be excited about at the recent OSCAAR test, showing few signs of a long layoff in his first day back behind the wheel.
“It’s just like riding a bike”, confirms Cornelius. “We struggled for the first few sessions, but were fortunate enough to have Jeremy Noon, Rick & Mike McColl from MRE there to help us get comfortable”
“Now that we’ve shaken the rust off. We’re ready to go to work. I can’t wait to get back”
Cornelius’ 2014 season will open this Sunday May 18th at Sunset Speedway. The event is scheduled for a 6:00pm start. Gate times and ticket prices are available at www.SunsetSpeedway.ca.
