By Randy Spencer – Meet the Drivers Night was the highlight as five divisions were on hand on another great night for racing at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway Saturday. Always a night that racers and fans alike mark on their calendars and once again had a great turnout.
Double heats were on the schedule and heat wins were as follows. Pure Stocks winnerswere Shawn Taylor and Danny Shantz. Mini Stocks winners were Hudson Nagy, Scott Simmons, Mark Klotz and Russ Aicken. Thunder Car wins went to, Dave Bailey, Shawn Arnott, Shawn Chenoweth and Brad Collison. Pro 4 Modified winners were Bill Pearsall and Dan Nanticoke while Late Model qualifying races were won by Dale Shaw and Shawn Chenoweth.
That closed out qualifying heats and the cars and drivers took to the track ready to greet the fans. Many drivers had “hero” cards and treats and goodies for awaiting fans. The track was packed with wall to wall people, young and old, everyone had a great time. Thanks to all the drivers who had giveaways for the fans like the teams of Mark DaSilva, Dale Shaw, London Recreational Racing and Bennett Chevrolet Cambridge.
Feature racing got underway with the Pure Stocks up first. Wayde Thorne and Shawn Taylor led the field to green and Taylor broke away from the pack and built up a big lead. Danny Shantz, last years Pure Stock champion was out for his first night behind the wheel taking over from son Josh who won last weeks feature. Shantz, who started at the back of the pack made his way to second place by lap four. As the race continued he closed the gap on Taylor and with a few laps to go he was on his bumper. Try as he may, Shantz just wasn’t able to get by and some lapped traffic sealed his fate on the last lap as Taylor picked up his second feature win of the season.
Mark Dennis and Hudson Nagy were up front for the start of the 25 lap feature for the Mini Stocks. Nagy, who won a heat earlier in the night, has been showing lots of promise in his rookie season. He led the first five laps until the veteran Russ Aicken managed to get by and took over the lead. Mike Holmes was glued to Aiken’s bumper for several laps until a pass in turn four on lap 12 put Holmes out front. A caution one lap later tightened the field. Holmes manged to hold the lead through several cautions and held off the London Recreation #71 car of Aiken and picked up his third feature victory of 2014.
Thunder Cars took the track for their 25 lap main event. Linda Stenhouse and Mitch Miljanovic were up front and three cars got involved in a mix up in turn 3-4 bringing out the caution and a complete restart. Miljanovic, in his second year of racing in the Thunder Car division has really come on strong of late and showed it as he held off a hard charging field, leading the first ten laps. Dave Bailey was battling Miljanovic hard and was looking to get past to take the lead. Persistence paid off for Bailey as he got around and led the next six laps, looking for his first feature victory in this, his “rookie” season in the Thunder Car division at Flamboro Speedway. Bailey of course is no rookie as he is a multi time Mini Stock points champion. Debris on the track brought out a caution on lap 17 and that tightened the field. On the restart, Mark Burbridge managed to get by Bailey and held him off to take the checkered flag.
Dan Petit and Dan Nanticoke were on the pole for the Pro 4 Modified feature event. Petit shot out to an early lead but by lap five retired to the infield with mechanical problems. Nanticoke has been really coming on strong of late and looked strong but he seemed to be having some handling issues as the race progressed. His car was pushing him high in the corners and on the last lap that was all the #8 of Craig Shaver needed and got by in turn two and picked up the feature win.
The last race of the night was for the Late Models. Rick Burbridge and Nick Roth led the cars. Shawn Chenoweth continued his stellar racing and took the lead early. Dale Shaw, last weeks feature winner was letting Chenoweth off easy as the two battled hard for 25 laps but Chenoweth emerged the victor as the checker flag flew.
That wrapped up another exciting night of racing. Please make plans to join us next week, June 14th for the first leg of the Annual Grisdale Triple Crown tournament.
