Coming into the season, Brandon McFerran made his goals simple and clear – he wanted to win the Sunset Speedway Mini Stock Championship. So far about a month into the season, he has well in working towards the season-end goal.
The 15-year-old has kicked off the 2014 season in a stellar way with back-to-back feature victories over hte past two weeks to give him five top-10 finishes to start the season. Six weeks into the season, he currently leads the standings by 31 points over Samantha Shaw.
The young driver has also proved that he can still post a solid finish when faced with adversity. A flat tire in the late half of the feature on May 24th forced him down pit road, forcing him to restart at hte back late in the feature. Still, McFerran was able to keep himself composed and solid, coming up through the field to score a 11th place finish to minimize the points damage.
While it still may be early in the season, the outlook for the second half of the year is strong based on the fact that McFerran posted four feature victories and 12 heat wins last year. Given the pure speed that his No. 64 Peter D Laird, Meisner Construction, Road Ranger, Finish Line Painting and Restoring, absoluteWedsite.com, Epic Race Wear, Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park, Fast Eddie Race Wear, NRD Bi Products, and DS Mclure farms Mustang each week and the work ethic that McFerran and team have in making sure to be prepared for each week’s event, you can only think that he will continue to get stronger as we get into the second half of the season.
In the same breath, though, anything is possible and with solid competition such as Shaw, Miles Tyson and a whole field of young talented drivers right on his tail right now in the standings, you just never know whether the pieces of the puzzle will come together. One night could shake up the standings and put someone else in control, or perhaps the luck will stay together and McFerran will be celebrating at season’s end.
Either way, it’s a good reason for you to head out to Sunset Speedway tonight for some stellar short track racing featuring the Graham Landscape Mini Stocks, the Super Stocks and the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Models.
