Billy and the #86 team were the only car out of the Spira Racing stable that would be racing throughout the Canada Day holiday weekend as they had planned a busy three consecutive nights of racing, at three different tracks around the province. The weekend started off with twin 20 lap features at the Full Throttle Motor Speedway in Varney. The team arrived with very hot and sunny weather that was forecast throughout the weekend with no threat of rain. The car had a minor push condition that was adjusted for during the practice sessions and Billy was very happy with the handling of the Wix Filters Mustang as they lined up for the first of two features that were to be run at the track instead of the conventional two heat races and one feature.
With the drivers drawing numbers on arrival to set the starting order and under a beautiful sunset setting, Billy would start 10th, followed by the current track points leader, Corry Young in the #36. Throughout the first five laps, the #36 made his way past Billy as the two cars moved towards the front of the field with the #36 leading the way in 5th and Billy behind him in 6th. As Billy and the #36 dealt with traffic, the #51 pulled well ahead of the field up front and by the halfway point, Billy was still behind the #36 in 4th. With two laps remaining, the #36 and #86 passed the #50 for second and third and then on the final lap, Billy got a run on the inside of the #36 to finish 2nd.
The second feature started in the reverse order of the first, so the #36 would start on the pole with Billy on his outside in 2nd. Billy would pull into the lead by the 3rd lap after some intense side by side racing with the #36 as the two cars pulled away from the field. With the #36 on his bumper, Billy caught up to the back of the field by the halfway mark. The flag man waved the slower cars over and the drivers did a great job moving down low to make room for Billy and the #36, who had picked up a head of steam and we running a blistering pace around the very fast speedway, known as the fastest little speedway in Ontario. Billy piloted the #86 through lapped traffic throughout the final laps to get the win, that was the first ever for the Spira team at the speedway. With a 2nd place finish and a win in the first two of four scheduled features for the team over the holiday weekend, a very happy team packed up and headed back to the shop to prepare the car for a two hour trip north to Sauble Speedway the following day.
The team were hoping to extend their two in a row winning streak at the track that is located in the popular summer vacation area, just outside of Sauble Beach.
