Billy’s brother Rick, who drives the #72 Hope and the City car and Ken Spira, who is Billy’s crew chief, started a conversation early Sunday morning after both Sunset and Sauble Speedways getting rained out the night before. You have to know these two when it comes to racing and before you knew it, Ken was calling Billy to run in the #2 car that is operated by Rick and Dave Mast as Rick was planing on taking the #72 to Flamboro Speedway. The early morning plan came about because Flamboro Speedway, that was also rained out on Saturday night, is one of the few tracks that run a rain date on the following day. Since the #86 is not legal for Flamboro as it is set up to run the rules packages at Sauble and Sunset Speedway, Rick offered Billy the ride in the #2, that is a Flamboro legal car.
Wanting a fix of racing at least once on the weekend, Ken and Billy took them up on the offer and headed to Aberfoyle to pick up the car. Not long after Scott found out that Billy was going, he dragged his brother Steven to the shop and the two loaded the #44 to join Billy in the #2 and Rick in the #72. After waiting for the track to dry from a morning drizzle, all three cars were set up during practice and were good to go for the heat races. Billy’s primary complaint was the obvious lack of power that the #2 had compared to the faster cars at the track.
All three cars were in the same heat race with Rick starting 4th, Scott 6th and Billy 7th. There were 14 cars in attendance with 7 cars running in each heat race. In the early laps, Rick slid back to 6th and Scott moved up to 4th as Billy moved up to 5th with an obvious inferior motor. Rick fell to the back of the field to finish 7th as Scott finished 3rd and Billy 5th.
The cars lined up for the 25 lap feature with Scott 7th, Rick 11th and Billy 13th. Scott was quick to move towards the front as he was 4th at the end of the 2nd lap, Rick moved up to 9th with Billy behind him in 10th. Billy took the position away from his brother by the 5th lap and then pulled into the infield, two laps latter when the engine expired, finishing the night for Billy and his ride in the #2 machine. The #13 moved the #36 over to take over the lead up front at the half way mark, and Scott followed him through to take over 2nd. Scott ran a consistent car length behind the #13 throughout the final laps to finish 2nd as Rick gained one final position with a pretty good handling car to finish 8th.
