Last week we were proud to be part of the 2nd Annual Sports Motor Racing Camp held at Sunset Speedway and provided by Scripture Union Sports. I had our Quaker State car for the event, and conducted three 45 minute seminars each day showing kids the various aspects of racing, from safety to set up.
The turnout was fantastic for 2014. Last year there were only 5 kids, but this year we had over 30.
We arrived at camp early Monday morning and set up. I just had to bring my precious pet and friend Buttons to be with me for the week. She would have been too lonely had she stayed home, plus she was awesome company for me and the kids loved her. When she heard the kids coming she would perk up and then get all the attention for the first two minutes of each session.
Spoiled Or What!
Kids learned about safety and the meaning of the flags on day one, preparation on day two, paying by the rules on day three….no cheating, and on day for it was final set up for racing, and they got to hear the car start up….they loved the loud engine noise. Day 5 we held a contest for the 3 teams to change a tire. All the children had a specific part to play in the pretend pit stop. It was a fun and exciting week.
Camp Coordinator Sarah and her group.
Every lesson was applied to everyday life encounters including school and playing sports. I closed each lesson with a spiritual message related to what we learned that day.
I showed each of the youngsters, (ages 8 to 14) how to use the equipment, with the oldest doing the work. They were very good, listened attentively and remembered the lesson from day one, that safety came first in all things, building the car, the safety equipment worn by the driver and of course working on the race car.
The high light for the kids was getting to drive the go carts. The instructors spent a lot of time going over the safety areas of racing. The course was laid out on Sunset Speedway’s back straightaway.
All of our sponsors were awesome, and helped in many ways. They supported the camp by sponsoring our car and some by helping one or more children, supplying gifts and other items, or donating to the overall costs of the camp. It was a great week and a tremendous success.
Thank you

Special thanks to Sarah and the Scripture Union staff for taking care of the children and making sure every minute of every day was fun and exciting.
Finally, we want to thank Mark Dilley and Steve Slaughter of Sunset Speedway for donating their facility to host the event. They helped every day make sure things went smooth and allowed me to use the tech building for the seminars.
