BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — October 23, 2014 — Quite a bit had changed since the last time that Kraig Kinser and his fellow World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series competitors raced at Port Royal Speedway in Pennsylvania. The wings and tires on the 900-plus horsepower machines have changed quite a bit over the last decade. At Port Royal itself, a number of upgrades to the facility and track surface have also been made since the last time the Outlaws rolled into town. The series will return to the sprawling half-mile located at the Juniata County Fairgrounds this weekend for a full night of racing.
The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series event at Port Royal Speedway is set for Saturday, October 25. A full night of racing begins with hot laps, followed by time trials, heat races, a dash, Last Chance Showdown and 25-lap, $10,000-to-win A- Feature. A special early start time will see heat races hit the track at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time.
In the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series in their last visit to Port Royal Speedway in 2004, Kinser finished fifth in the A-Feature. The third-generation driver timed in ninth-fastest of the 25 entries to open the night. Kinser finished third in the first heat race, which put him in the second dash. In that five-lap contest, the native of Bloomington, Indiana, finished third to line up on the outside of the third row for the 25-lap main event.
“With it being so long since we’ve been at Port Royal, you have to treat it pretty much like a new track,” said Kinser, who drives the Mesilla Valley Transportation/Casey’s General Store Maxim. “Having raced on a number of bigger tracks this year that should help, but Port Royal is a pretty unique place. We’ll take a good look at the surface and configuration when we get there and look at some of our notes and go from there. It sounds like it’s going to be a great event and the fans up there are certainly excited.”
The third-generation driver has taken part in eight races in the state of Pennsylvania this season with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at three different tracks. Kinser’s most recent start in the state came in the National Open at the famed Williams Grove Speedway at the beginning of the month. He also has raced at Lernerville Speedway in Western Pennsylvania and Lincoln Speedway in the middle portion of the state.
Kinser finished 20th last weekend with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series at Fremont Speedway in Ohio. He opened the night as the 13th-fastest qualifier, which put him on the front row of the third heat race. Kinser finished second in that heat to transfer to the 40-lap A-Feature at the third-mile bullring.
The 2005 winner of the Knoxville Nationals is currently ninth in the series standings on the strength of 30 top-10 finishes, including a win at Clay County Fair Speedway in Iowa, last month.
“We really want to end the year on a strong note and have a good finish at Port Royal and then in both races at Charlotte as well,” Kinser said. “We’ll face stiff competition at Port Royal with the Pennsylvania guys and then at Charlotte, there will be cars from across the country there. Both races will be a good measuring stick to see how we go into the off-season.”
