WATKINS GLEN, NY – Watkins Glen International is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $2.25 million by the State of New York and Governor Andrew Cuomo to assist in modernization efforts and repaving of the historic facility. Watkins Glen International receives the award after being named a Priority Project by the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council (STREDC) in 2014. The grant comes on the heels of $33.5 million in private capital investments at Watkins Glen International over the past 10 years, with an additional $12 million committed for 2015. The investments cement The Glen’s position as the premier road racing facility in North America.
“We’re extremely grateful to have the support of Governor Cuomo, Senator Tom O’Mara, Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and Co-chairs of STREDC Tom Tranter and Harvey Stenger,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “Watkins Glen International has been a worldwide tourist destination in upstate New York for more than 50 years. With the support of our elected officials, regional council and dedicated race fans around the world, we’re poised to continue shining an international spotlight on the Finger Lakes region for another 50 years.”
Watkins Glen International announced in November its intentions to repave the historic road course following the 2015 Cheez-It™ 355 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race weekend. The $12 million in private and $2.25 million in public funds will be applied towards infrastructure modernization & marketing during the repaving project.
