After working hard throughout the off-season to get everything prepared for the upcoming season, Rick Walt and Walt Motorsports are prepared to open up the 2015 season this weekend at Sunset Speedway with the Innisfil, Ontario track’s opening night. “I think with the switch to Sunset, we are looking to run inside the top ten each and every night and we have put a lot of effort into making that happen,” Walt commented. “If we can steal a win or two through the year, that’s the ultimate goal.”
As announced earlier in the off-season, Walt made the switch to Sunset following a successful rookie campaign at Barrie Speedway. Last year, Walt finished in teh top-five in points after scoring nine feature victories, and ended off the season on a high note with a top 10 finish at the Autumn Colors Classic.
Walt and team have been working hard to prepare the No. 31 Cindy Snow ReMax, Rust Check Canada, Kitchen Tire, Eisses Pumping Services, Oro Collision, Abstract Salon, Simone Autosport and Hotc Late Model for competition. The team went through the car over the off-season and has been testing this week. All hopes are high to open up the year at the front of the field in a class that has over 30 drivers pre-registered for the season.
“The competition level is unreal down at Sunset,” Walt said. “So many great drivers with (Chris) Morrow, (Dwayne) Baker, (Jason) Witty, the Hallyburtons, and (Tom) Walters. Competition is as high as you will see in the province and we hope to add our name to this list.”
On top of the competition, this year marks a new format for many of the Sunset Speedway regulars as the track shift from a single 50 lap feature to a pair of features each night, with time trials setting the field. This is a format that Walt knows all to well from his experience at Barrie Speedway.
“Double features are fun to run,” he said. “It gives you two chances and/or two big winners each night. If you are able to double down, its the greatest achievement. We were fortunate to win double features a couple times and there’s nothing better! If you wreck in the first one now, that’s a different story; you better get working hard to be ready for feature two. It wears on a team all year long if you are not ready for it.”
