| MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 18, 2015)—NEMCO Motorsports driver Dominique Van Wieringen traveled to Washington, D.C., by invitation on Thursday, May 14 to honor state and federal law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the protection of their communities.
Van Wieringen and Mike Dryman, a performance development coach of Performance Solutions, joined tens of thousands of law enforcement officers and their families on Thursday for the 13th annual Steve Young National Honor Guard Competition and Pipe Band Competition. Hosted by the Fraternal Order of Police, the competition and demonstration provides an opportunity for law enforcement organizations from all across the nation and Canada to perform ceremonial and patriotic tributes for public viewing. Van Wieringen, an Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada, native, was able to visit with the Canadian National Drill Team. “The police officers who protect our communities have earned my profound and deep respect and gratitude,” Van Wieringen said. “My invitation during National Police Week was an important opportunity to honor their work and remember the sacrifices of those who have fallen in the line of duty.” In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees, and the 2015 National Police Week is observed Sunday, May 10—Saturday, May 16. University of North Carolina (UNCC) at Charlotte student, Van Wieringen met with North Carolina’s U.S. Representative Richard Hudson (NC-08). Hudson, a University of North Carolina at Charlotte alumnus, is serving his second term in the United States Congress representing North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District. The 19-year old received a personal tour of the U.S. Capitol by members of several Federal Law Enforcement agencies. A United States Flag was gifted to Van Wieringen by Federal Law Enforcement as a sign of admiration for her strength, confidence and empowerment as a female within auto racing. After it was flown over the U.S. Capitol on May 14, the flag will be issued a keepsake Certificate of Authenticity by the Architect of the Capitol. In addition, while in Washington, D.C., Van Wieringen was photographed by Michael Garcia. Garcia was exhibited in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collection September 11: Bearing Witness to History. |
