The first race of the 2016 season is in the books for the Speed Energy Stadium Super Trucks, and they’re proving right away why they were a fan favourite last year.
Battling nose to tail through the final two laps of the race, Sheldon Creed was able to get alongside Paul Morris for the lead through turn eight, beating him a drag race to the finish line to score the victory. The 2015 Series Champion has had success in Australia before, crossing the finish line on his side last year for a third place finish. For Morris, it marked a stellar finish as this marked the debut in the series for the V8 Supercross racer.
Keegan Kincaid would finish third, followed by Robby Gordon and Matt Mingay. Gordon was the quickest truck during qualifying, though started from the rear as series officials reverse the qualifying results to set the grid.
It wasn’t an easy trip for Gordon up through the pack, either, as he was one of many drivers to suffer issues during the race. Toby Pierce looked to be headed to victory, but bounced it off the inside wall, spinning around and suffering heavy damage that ultimately saw him finish second last. Burt Jenner, meanwhile, spun around in trying to avoid, with Gordon getting spun virtue of contact from Mingay.
The incident marked Jenner’s second of the day as he spun earlier in the event virtue of contact with Creed while battling for second at the time.
The Stadium Super Trucks have two more races this weekend in Australia, with the next event taking place at Saturday, March 5 at 12am EST.
