A month ago, it seemed as though everything was coming together for the perfect season for Tim Tolton and Black Magic Racing.
However, there’s a small snag currently in the plans.
Tolton and wife Donna Tolton were hoping to celebrate their “silver wedding anniversary” by running Dale Earnhardt’s silver paint scheme full-time in the Lucas Oil Sporstman Cup Series. If sponsorship doesn’t come together for the team in the next several weeks, though, it may not happen as planned.
The team recently found out that one sponsor will be unable to return, while another is on the fence about this season. Tolton was hoping to come back to the series and have continued success after finishing seventh in points last season.
“The 2015 season wasn’t great but could have been worse too,” he said last month. “We finished seventh in the Sportsman Series points but had too many DNFs and left lots of room for improvement.”
The season was supposed to also bring happiness for the whole family as Tolton was set to split time in the car with his son Bobby. The plan was to have Bobby run half of the races, with Tim crew cheifing for those events, while Bobby crew chiefs for the races that Tim runs.
“We work well together and hope that retiring the old car which we nicknamed ‘nightmare’ will allow us to have a more successful season,” he said.
While the search for sponsors continued, the team is still moving forward with plans for the year, including this year’s charity effort.
Each race season, Black Magic Racing has chosen a charity that is special to us to raise funds or awareness for in what we call “Racing for a Reason”. The charity for this season will be Special Olympics Ontario-North Wellington “North Wellington Bravehearts” and will include the “Bravehearts 100” Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup race on Saturday August 27th at Full Throttle Motor Speedway. Additionally, the team will look to raise awareness for organ donation and autism.
“We urge other race teams to join us in creating a “Racing for a Reason” program,” Tolton said. “Choose a charity or cause that is close to your heart and promote it.
“It can’t hurt, but it sure can help!”
