On Tuesday, it was announced that Hot Wheels would release their take on the Borg Trophy which is awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. IndyCar driver and 2014 Indianapolis 500 champion Ryan Hunter-Reay was on hand at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum to reveal the replica and to celebrate the last 99 Indy 500’s with 99 hot wheels cars.
“All 99 cars featured on this trophy have an authentic Indy 500 story,” Chris Down, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Hot Wheels quoted. “Most of them are about the journey, not the win. For kids and adults that is exactly what Hot Wheels play is about. Everyone has a Hot Wheels story!”
The Hot Wheels Indy 500 Champion Trophy stands at about nine feet tall and will feature 99, 1:64 cars, with each car drawing inspiration from the stories behind each winning Indy 500 driver. For example – Wilbur Shaw, who won the 500 back in 1937, who had his mechanic riding with him in the car to Bobby Unser who slept in his car when he was a rookie in 1963. Around the base of the trophy a Hot Wheels orange track will wrap around it, representing the competition and will run through every car.
“My first experience with racing was with Hot Wheels cars, I remember zipping cars down the orange track, and now I watch my two sons do the same,” Hunter-Reay stated. “Sharing stories from past races with my kids opens up a conversation about hard work, competition and my passion for racing.”
This special trophy will go on display starting May 31, 2016 and will be a apart of The Hot Wheels Race to Win Exhibit which runs May 14- August 13 at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit is family friendly and has hand on activities to demonstrate what makes real cars go fast. On select days some of the visitors will get the chance to race their cars down the Hot Wheels track against famous race car drivers from IndyCar, NASCAR or NHRA drag racing circuits.
