Josef Newgarden’s Indy 500 effort will feature a connection to the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911.
The driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet for Ed Carpenter Racing will adorn a helmet that pays homage for the inaugural race winner, Ray Harroun. The helmet designed by Brett King Design includes Harroun’s goggles and toothy smile.
Newgarden will start the race from the front row after qualifying second during Sunday’s session. Despite showing speed on ovals through the years, his last couple efforts on the 2.5-mile oval have resulted in finishes 25th or worse.
“I feel confident,” Newgarden said. “We have a pretty strong package with Chevy and our ECR team and we’ll try and put the Preferred Freezer car in victory lane on Sunday.”
