On Tuesday, NASCAR announced stiff penalties to Chase Elliott and the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team. The penalty was an L1 level penalty for “modification of components to affect the aerodynamic properties of the vehicle.”
As a result of this penalty, Elliott lost 15 points dropping the team two positions in the points standings. Additionally, crew chief, Alan Gustafson, and car chief, Joshua Kirk, have been suspended from the next race. Gustafson was also fined $25,000. The finish will also be encumbered meaning the points earned for the segment win will not count for the remainder of the playoffs, and cannot be used for a tie-breaker.
Reports are that the infraction was related to the rear spoiler.
Hendrick Motorsports will not appeal the decision. Kenny Francis has been named the interim crew chief for next week.
