Arguably, the hottest topic in sports right now is the recent of wave of national anthem protests. Many sports organizations have allowed these protests to occur. Though the issue has been primarily focused on the NFL, due to the overwhelming attention this issue has received, it was inevitable that NASCAR would be part of the conversation.
This past weekend, the situation took experienced an uptick after recent remarks made by President Donald Trump. There was so much media coverage, NASCAR finally had to make a statement to let everyone know where the sanctioning body stands.
On Monday, NASCAR released the following:
“Sports are a unifying influence in our society, bringing people of differing backgrounds and beliefs together. Our respect for the national anthem has always been a hallmark of our pre-race events. Thanks to the sacrifices of many, we live in a country of unparalleled freedoms and countless liberties, including the right to peacefully express one’s opinion.”
The statement indicates strong support for the national anthem, and the veterans who sacrificed to provide freedom for this country. It also recognizes the rights of everyone to express one’s own opinion.
This position seemingly tries to do what many people are asking, keep politics and sports separated. The national anthem and opening prayer have been part of this sport since its inception. This statement solidifies the sanctioning body’s commitment to that tradition without taking away the rights of anyone to peacefully express their own opinion. Although, it should be noted that NASCAR does not specifically indicate if it would permit or not permit protest at its events.
During this past weekend’s events at New Hampshire, many team owners also expressed their opinions on the matter.
NASCAR legend, Richard Petty, issued perhaps the most strongly worded statement via USA Today saying, “Anybody that don’t stand up for that ought to be out of the country. Period,” Petty said, via USA Today. “If they don’t appreciate where they’re at … what got them where they’re at? The United States.”
Similar words were also issued by NASCAR team owner, Richard Childress. “Get you a ride on a Greyhound bus when the national anthem is over,’’ Childress said. “Anybody that works for me should respect the country we live in. So many people gave their lives for it. This is America.’’
Many social media outlets lit up with the stories and many of the comments supported NASCAR. A significant portion of the comments indicated they were not NASCAR fans, but would be going forward.
NASCAR’s position on this highly controversial issue may actually garner more fans for the sport, which could result in higher television ratings. The ratings for the NFL have been falling in the wake of the protests which are permitted by the organization.
