2014 Sunset Speedway Mini Stock Champion: Brandon McFerran

On Saturday night at Sunset Speedway, Brandon McFerran locked up his first career championship with a solid third place finish in the feature behind Samantha Shaw and Billy Schwartzenburg.

“We made a plan coming into this season that we wanted to take a run at the championship”, McFerran commented post-race in an interview with track announcer Spencer Lewis. “It was a lot of work, a tonne of fun and man does it feel good to finally lock it up.

“I’ve been racing since I was five years old and I’ve never even been a points leader. I didn’t really know what to do or how to feel when we took the points lead earlier this year. My Dad’s been a huge help. He sets this car up, he busts his ass in the shop with me all week and he really coached me through this whole experience. I wouldn’t be anywhere without him.”

The 15-year-old had a stellar season in winning eight of the features, including four in a row, and only posting one finish outside of the top 10 after he worked his way back to 11th following a mid-race spin earlier this year.

“I can’t say enough about Tim Ellas,” McFerran continued. “The man’s a genius and I’m honoured to have had the chance to work alongside him this season. I don’t even have the time to explain just how much I’ve learned from him. He’s definitely been a game changer for our entire program.”

The driver of the No. 64 Peter D. Laird Transport, Sauble Falls Tent & Trailer Park, Road Ranger, East End Car Wash, Creative Edge Graphics, Fast Eddie Racewear, Finish Line Painting & Restoration, DS McClure Farms, EPIC Racewear by OnePromo.ca and AMD Electric Mustang has shown speed throughout his entire young career to date, whether racing at Flamboro Speedway or Sunset Speedway. That was highlighted by the four trips to victory lane during last season.

However, with age and more laps comes experience. The experience showed this year as McFerran was able to take care of his equipment and post consistent strong finishes to keep himself in the thick of the conversation year round. As he becomes a stronger driver behind the wheel with age and the team gets stronger, he’ll certainly be a threat to win any of the big races as the short track playoffs begin. Look for McFerran to be within the front runners on Thursday night when the field takes the green for the Frequent Flyer 50 at Sunset Speedway.
