By Randy Spencer – The first of two APC United Late Model Series 100 lap races took place at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro SpeedwaySaturday night and it was one of the best races in recent memory. The crowd was huge, the biggest I’ve seen personally in a long time.
The first Mini Stock feature saw a return of a former competitor behind the wheel in Brandon McFerran’s #64. Ron McFerran used to race the car but when son Brandon got old enough to take over, Ron stepped back and let the young gun take over. On lap 2, the 64 went around bringing out the caution. Russ Aicken led from flag to flag to pick up the checkered flag.
In the Thunder Car feature, Mark Burbridge and Shawn Arnott broke away from the pack with Burbridge picking up the win.
The first 22 cars were set for the APC Meineke 100 through time trials. A, B feature would be run to decide the final four spots. With eight cars taking the green that would mean four wouldn’t make the show. The race didn’t start well for Jr. Farrelly. Some tire smoke was coming from the 72 car on lap seven and he would eventually take it to the pits. Trevor Collver and Tom Gibbons battled early with the 97 of Collver making his way to the front where he would remain and pick up the checkered flag.
The second round of features followed with newcomer Joe Fleet lining up beside Tyler Mayhew as they led a field of 12 cars to green. Mayhew led lap one with Wayde Thorne leading the next two. But before long the top two cars in points found their way to the front and once again waged battle. Michael Kenny and Andy Wheller battled bumper to bumper as they did in round one but this time the veteran Wheller held off the hard charging Kenny to pick up the checkered flag. After racing, these two are just two points apart with Wheller in front.
Rick Robinson and Blair Wickett were on the pole for this one as 18 cars took the green in the second 20 lap feature. An early caution on lap 4 as the 03 of Jake Gilbert had a tire go flat coming out of turn two and he slowed. Robinson, a veteran who has been coming on lately led the first four laps. Another caution a few laps later as three cars got mixed up in turn two. Russ Aicken’s good luck from race one wouldn’t continue as he along with Kyle Istead and Chad Corcoran got together. After that Ron McFerran would find his way to the front and after quite a while out of the race seat, he showed he had no rust and made it to the front and held a hard charge from Clark Hartman and Sheldon Bossom to pick up the checkered flag. Hudson Nagy finished 5th and sits atop Mini Stocks points leaders.
The final race before the 100 lapper was the second Thunder Car 20 lap feature. Mitch Miljanovic and Chris Howse were on the pole. Kevin Gallant and Shawn Arnott had some problems early on as did Howse. Once again a battle from two racers that have a bit of history as Brad Collison and Mark Burbridge battled hard. This continued on as it looked like Burbridge would pull a bump and run but Collison would have none of it and held on for the checkered flag. The 89 car driven by both Shawn Chenoweth and Brad Collison remain first in points as the night came to and end.
That brought to a close another exciting night of racing at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway. The Grisdale Late Models make their return and are also joined by he Ray’s Auto Centre & Towing Thunder Cars, the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop Mini Stocks, the BOMB Energy Drink Pro 4 Modifieds and the Pure Stocks. Pit gates open at 4pm, Grandstands at 5pm and green flag flies at 7pm.
