Speaking with the media over the weekend, Richard Petty announced that Sam Hornish Jr. will not return to Richard Petty Motorsports in 2015. Petty was directly asked whether Hornish would be driving the No. 9 entry, in which Petty responded, “No, I don’t think so.”
“We’re still working on what we’re gonna do with the 9 car and crew and all that stuff,” he added. “Things are looking up. We’ve got some stuff coming down the pike, but we don’t have it corralled yet.”
Thus far in 2015, Hornish has scored three top-10s in the 35 races to currently sit 25th in points. Hornish has only scored three top-fives and 12 top-10s in 166 career starts.
Petty would not divulge into who could possibily fill the seat, saying its all about combining the right driver and sponsorship package together.
“We can’t just go with a driver and then not have the money, and we can’t go with just the money and not have a driver, so it’s gonna be interesting,” he commented.
Petty also assured the media that RPM would be a two-car organization, with the No. 9 car joining Almirola on track. Almirola recently announced that he has resigned the U.S. Air Force as a sponsor.
