PICTON, Ont. – June 13, 2016 – Tim Kerr emerged from a challenging two-week period of Big-Block Modified competition with a smile and a positive attitude. Despite, his recent struggles at Brewerton and Fulton speedways in New York, Kerr is determined to use the tough stretch as a building block.
Two weeks ago, Kerr was involved in an accident with Max McLaughlin at Brewerton that was crippling for his racecar. The car was damaged beyond his ability to repair it for Saturday’s race at Fulton.
“It was just a racing deal. I don’t know whether he bounced off the wall and came down or if I wasn’t under him far enough,” explained Kerr. “It cleaned the shock tower off the car and it was bad from there. I don’t think it was anybody’s fault.”
Kerr was the recipient of some good will from within the racing community. The Gypsum Racing team, owner and operated by John Wight, loaned Kerr a car for the June 4 race.
“We were lucky enough to be able to drive one of their cars to keep our handicap and our points. It was pretty neat to be able to do that,” Kerr said gratefully. “Their whole group was awesome to work with. There aren’t too many people in the sport who would do that anymore.”
After a long week of late nights in the shop and a trip to Bicknell Racing Products in St. Catharines, Kerr’s Bronskill Group/Hubert-Kerr Construction/Home Hardware Picton No.07 was ready for action again at Brewerton. The Picton, Ont. native started near 18th in the competitive field and began to race forwarded. His progress, however, was halted by more misfortune, albeit less severe.
“Friday night we had a shock break. We were good. I think the car was fast and had good speed in it. The shock broke though and punctured the oil tank somehow,” Kerr said of the incident. “It’s too bad. The car felt good, it felt like it should.”
The team made the necessary repairs Friday night and Saturday morning before returning to action at Fulton. Kerr picked up a heat race win and raced as high as seventh in the feature before he fell victim to a flat left-rear tire. He raced back to 11th after changing the downed sneaker.
“It’s part of racing. You carry on to the next week and forget about it,” Kerr said. “The car was so good in the heat race. I should have did my normal stuff, but I tried one small adjustment to see if that would help, but I think that threw it out of the ballpark a little bit.”
Although Kerr would have preferred the top-five finish he was working towards, he’s still satisfied knowing he’s making progress with his program at Fulton Speedway.
“We’re at the point where we have to try little small things. The car was the best it’s been at Fulton,” he said.
Kerr hopes his string of bad luck has ended and he will be able to race to top-five finishes on June 17 and 18 at Brewerton and Fulton this weekend. For event information, visitwww.fultonspeedway.com.
