After Australian driver and pole-sitter Brodie Kostecki lost the lead on lap 36, it was all Ben Rhodes from there on out. The K&N East points leader led the final 115 laps for a commanding victory at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night. Rhodes become the 11th different winner in as many K&N races at Iowa.
Rhodes felt some heat from his Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) teammate Scott Heckert, but the No. 34 car couldn’t get by. Heckert then lost second to Bill McAnally Racing driver Nick Drake on lap 134. Drake and Heckert grabbed their best career finishes, second and third respectively. Jay Beasley and Brandon Jones rounded out the top-five.
The East drivers took the first eight spots, until David Mayhew finished ninth. He scored the win on the West side.
It was a tough night for Brandon McReynolds, as he slammed into the wall on lap 68, effectively ending his night. Three laps after the lap 75 half-way break, Cole Custer and Cameron Hayley tangled, collecting Kostecki as an innocent victim. The pole-sitter Kostecki led the first 35 laps before being taken out in the lap 78 wreck.
Tonight’s race was one of two visits to Iowa Speedway for the K&N Series, as another East-West combo race will be run in August. The Casey’s General Stores 150 will be televised on FOX Sports 1 on Sat., May 24 at 8:30 a.m. ET.
