As the SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road Presented by TRAXXAS series continues to grow in their second year of competition, a new milestone will be reached later on today. The high-flying, competitive trucks are set to race at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway later today as part of IndyCar Carb Day.
The first race will take place at 3:10 p.m. EST, with the second race scheduled for 4:40 p.m. EST.
“Coors Light Carb Day is a fan favorite at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway because it combines racing and other entertainment in one afternoon and the addition of the TRAXXAS series to our schedule provides further excitement during the day,” said J. Douglas Boles, Indianapolis Motor Speedway president. “The Stadium Super Trucks race often with the Verizon IndyCar Series and produce an incredibly exciting style of racing everywhere they run and we look forward to seeing them put on a show at IMS.”
The driver line-up looks pretty solid heading into the fourth and fifth event of the season with 10 drivers scheduled to participate in today’s events.
Robby Gordon is hoping to score his third win of the season behind the wheel of his No. 7 Menards ride as he currently lads the points, 20 points ahead of PJ Jones. Gordon won both the season opener at St. Petersburg and the second race in Long Beach, with a second place finish sandwiched inbetween.
Interestingly, Jones will miss this weekend’s event so he will certainly take a hit in the championship standings. As a result, Gordon’s closest competitor is Jarrett Brooks. Brooks currently sits 27 points behind Gordon with a pair of podium finishes to start the year.
Sheldon Creed is looking for his first win of the season after a pair of wins last year. The 16-year-old is coming off a third place finish at Long Beach.
In the first three events this year, Scotty Steele has yet to post a podium finish with his best finish this year so being a sixth – twice. Apdaly Lopez of Mexico finished sixth at Long Beach for his best career finish to date so no doubt the Mexican will be looking to finish in the top half of the field today.
After running seven events last year, Arie Luyendyke Jr. will be making his first start of the season this weekend.
Notably, four drivers – Burt Jenner, Keegan Kincaid, Robbie Pierce and Charles Dorrance – will be making their first SST starts this weekend.
“My first trip to Indy as a competitor was in 1993 driving for A.J. Foyt,” series founder Robby Gordon commented. “I grew up watching Rick Mears, A.J. and others race at the Speedway and dreamed of driving there, but I never imagined we would race off-road trucks at Indy. I have a lot of great memories from Indianapolis and this will be another one added to the list.”
Fans are encouraged to head to the series website http://stadiumsupertrucks.com/ and watch the live stream of both events later this afternoon.
The Menards at the Brickyard Formula Off-Road by TRAXXAS race on Coors Light Carb Day will be broadcast on NBCSN June 13 at midnight EDT.
