Kasey Kahne looks to become fourth Hendrick Motorsports driver in Chase

For the 2014 season, NASCAR brought forth a new system for the Chase for the Championship. The motto was simple – win a race, you’re in the 2014 Chase.

When the system debuted, Kasey Kahne commented that he was glad to see the system as he isn’t known for his consistency. Kahne is fast on any given week, however bad luck continues to plague the No. 5 Farmer’s Insurance team, whether due to wreck or mechanical.

13 races into the season, his three teammates – Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson – are qualified for the Chase. Kahne? Not yet as he hasn’t gotten a win, and currently sits 18th in points. If Kahne wants to help Rick Hendrick put all four cars in the Chase, he needs a win between now and Richmond in September.

If there’s any track that Kahne can do it, Pocono is the track to watch him at.

Last year, Kahne looked to have the fastest car going in the spring event, however a mechanical issue forced him behind the wall on lap one. The Hendrick Motorsports team got his Chevrolet back in track, but many laps down. Still, Kahne was running lap times quicker than the leaders.

In the second event, he backed up those lap times, leading 66 laps on his way to scoring the victory. It also marked his second Pocono win, as he scored the victory on the tricky triangle back in 2008.

As previously stated, Kahne is consistently fast and that is proven with his finishes so far this year. On the intermediate tracks, Kahne has a couple top 10s, including a third place finish last month at Kansas Speedway. With momentum and speed on his side, the pieces may come together for NASCAR’s sweet boy.
