After being away from Sunset Speedway for three weeks, the stars of the Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Limited Late Models, the Super Stocks and the Graham Landscape Mini Stocks return this weekend in hopes of putting on a great show. Though this weekend marks a special show as the stars of Sauble Speedway will invade the line-up this weekend for the second half of the home-to-home series. Will Sunset’s stars rise to the top? Or will Sauble’s drivers sweep in and grab the glory?
Sauble Falls Tent and Trailer Park Late Models
The last time the stars of Sunset Speedway were at their home track, it was Dwayne Baker picking up the victory after a great duel at the front of field with Jason Witty. Baker has been solidly consistent this year with multiple trips to victory lane, currently sitting in the top-five in points. Following a disappointing run at Sauble Speedway two weeks ago, Baker will look to get things back on track this weekend.
Jason Witty was the strongest of Sunset’s drivers at Sauble Speedway two weeks ago, leading the first half of the feature. However, he’d get passed by Sauble front runner Jason Parker, with the motor blowing up two laps later. Ready to go again, the points leader is hoping for a third trip to victory lane.
Chris Morrow, Jason Witty and Dwayne Baker have each reached victory lane this year, leaving many drivers on the list looking for a win at the halfway mark of the 2014 season. With such a talent-laddened field, drivers such as Taylor Holdaway, Mike Bentley and Sean Cronan will hope to add their name to the list in the closing stages.
Though standing in their way will be the likes of Josh Stade, Scott McTeer and Jason Parker as they are set to invade this weekend. Each of these drivers are strong on their own track, so can they translate that success to Sunset Speedway? Parker has shown the most promise over the years with strong runs in the past as he tries to go to for the home-to-home sweep after winning the first leg of the event two weeks ago.
Super Stocks
Quickly becoming one of the young drivers to watch on a weekly basis, Cayden Lapcevich made the trip to Sunset Speedway victory lane for his series-leading third victory of the year. Lapcevich has looked strong at each turn and hopes that it continues as he looks to become a champion possibly for the first time. Lapcevich had a strong run at Sauble, so keep an eye on the No. 76 on Saturday night.
It took Randy Rusnell a bit, but he’s found his groove and when he finds his groove, he’s one to watch. The previous two seasons so that with back-to-back championships. Can the Rocket make it three in a row? We’ll just have to see.
Lane Zardo also has the speed, but has suffered what can only be called ‘flat tire syndrome’. Flat tires have taken the 18-year-old out of contention on multiple weeks so if he can avoid bad luck, he’ll be at the front at the end.
Joe Adams, Ken Grubb and Vaughn Lawrence each have been strong at Sunset Speedway in the past, posting solid finishes in the invitationals. They may be Sauble stars, but they could be ones to watch. Ron Lawrence will be another driver that fans will have their eyes on as he won the first leg of the home-to-home series.
Graham Landscape Mini Stocks
July 5th marked the last time that Sunset Speedway ran their three regular divisions. July 5th marked another trip to victory lane for Brandon McFerran. With how he has his mustang set-up, its’ a trend that has been common this year and could likely continue on Saturday night. Beyond that, McFerran had one of the quickest cars at Sauble and was able to finish in the top 10 despite going for a spin on the first lap.
Nicole Podewils has made a pair of starts this season, with both starts equaling a pair of third place finishes. The previous division champion will look to return to victory lane once again with her mustang, thrilling the fans who have stuck with her through the years.
The Mini Stocks have seen five different feature winners – McFerran, Miles Tyson, Billy Schwartzenburg, Andy Kamrath and Warren Paxton. Could that number grow? Well, Podewils is a good option, but so are the Melenhorst brothers. Billy and Ben have been getting stronger with each week, posting top-five finishes on a weekly basis. It could be a battle of the brothers on Saturday night.
Billy Schwartzenburg won the first leg of the home-to-home series at Sauble on July 12th and has announced intentions to run the full Sauble schedule this year. Heading into this weekend with a trip to Sunset, he’ll be one to watch simply based on previous races and experience. Another pair that have shown strong speed at Sunset in the past and could head to victory lane on Saturday night – Corey Jones and Kevin Bridge. They’re both really strong at Sauble Speedway, and should be strong this weekend at Sunset Speedway.
Normally when we have a couple weeks off, the racing is off the charts in craziness happening. That happened on July 5th as it seemed there was chaos at every turn. Could we see ar repeat this weekend? Quite promising based on the
