TROY, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. increased his points lead at Southern National Motorsports Park by sweeping twin Late Model features on Saturday night. Saturday was his first visit to victory lane dating back to a win in the closest race in Motor Mile Speedway history back in June.
“Before this weekend, we hadn’t raced in three weeks,” Lemons said. “That may not seem long to others but for me and my guys it felt like an eternity. We were ready to get back to the track and I think it showed.”
Lemons started the day on the right note, putting his car on the pole with a 15.575 second lap. Lemons took sole possession of the lead on the opening lap of the first race and held off several challenges during a handful of races to score the victory.
“I was trying to save my tires but Ricky Jones and Ryan Wilson were always in my mirror,” Lemons stated. “Those restarts didn’t help either. I just hoped we had enough left for the second race.”
A seven car invert ahead of the second race put Lemons in the seventh starting position. Lemons methodically worked his way through the field, getting up to second before a late race caution. Lemons chose the outside line on the final restart and rocketed to the lead and never looked back as he completed the sweep.
“Man this feels great,” Lemons exclaimed. “The pole and two wins, we couldn’t ask for a better night… well, a full field cars would have been nice. My crew chief Brandon works his butt on these cars and I wouldn’t here without him or these other guys. They are at the shop almost every night of the week; this isn’t just aSaturday night operation.”
With his two victories, Lemons increased his lead to 64 in Southern National’s championship standings. The victories mark his fifth and sixth wins of the 2014 season.
Tommy Lemons, Jr. will be back in action on Saturday, August 23rd at Southern National Motorsports Park.
